History

The 2008 Tanzacat will see the event celebrating its 10th anniversary. It started in what was supposed to be a small weekend event by some Dutch and local sailors who wanted to keep on sailing in the wonderful conditions of Msasani Bay. What better excuse then have an event over two complete weekends called Tanzacat!!! From a small annual event it has now become the largest open class Catamaran event in Africa. At the last event there were no less than 52 Catamarans with over a hundred sailors participating with participants from as far as America.

2001 saw Peter Dreyer and Alexander Mulder organizing a 2 week long Tanzacat. This included the first scheduled crossing to Zanzibar - however it never materialised, only making it as far as Lazy Lagoon. The race schedule included the usual Tanzacat Olympic courses as well as a race to Fungu Yasin, a daphne Reef Race, an Islands Race, the Sinda Island Race, a sailing clinic, a Pangavini/Bongoyo race and the Zanzbar crossing via Lazy Lagoon. Since then the event has grown to a record event in 2004 where over 50 catamarans took part, shortly follwed by 39 in 2006.

This year’s event promises to be even bigger with much more fun and antics. The highlight of the event is no doubt the crossing from mainland Tanzania to the spice island of Zanzibar. At the last crossing some of the fleet had dolphins guiding them home!! Tanzania not only offers quote " The best sailing conditions I have come across " world Hobie 16 Champion, that I have seen anywhere in the world, but the sheer beauty of Tanzania from its amazing national parks, to Kilimanjaro and the magical spice islands of Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba.

The ONLY problem you will have participating in Tanzacat is you will count the number of days to the next Tanzacat event.

Karibu Sana Tanzania and Tanzacat
